Happy Birthday to me!

Yes, it is that time of year when I get to celebrate my Birthday again. #54! Although my first few Birthdays are a little difficult to recall, the ones from 10 years old on I remember well and even some of the early childhood gifts my parents gave me. The early years of Birthday celebrations focused on gifts and cake. Each year mom would make a cake in the shape of something important to me: football field, race car, etc. Those were the days.

The greatest gift I could have this year is the joy of being with my family (although our kids are a long ways away from Jill and me). I am so grateful for the gift of life God blessed me with this year. I cannot express the joy I have when I see my grand daughters play in their room or my son lead worship at the church he serves as youth pastor. The things that matter most are family and friends rather than things.

There is no greater gift than that of life and I can enjoy it here and now plus in the future to come. Yes, that is right, my hope is build on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. As friends write on my Skype wall nice greetings, I will be thinking of the Birthday that almost didn't happen. "Thanks Lord for this wonderful gift."

Now, for Valerie and Alex, there is still time to shop....January 24 is a week away!

I Do Not Believe In New Years Resolutions

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”

This Bill Vaughan quote sums up the challenges for New Years. For some it is a chance to make better plans, others a chance to see the past finally disappear. Beginning as far back as 153 B.C., the Rome mythical king, Janus, had two faces, one looking back and the other forward. May people can hardly wait for the each New Year to bring about a change in their life. My question is, why wait?

I have never been a fan of New Year’s resolutions because of this very point, if something I am doing needs changing, why would I wait for a certain date on a calendar, should I not make the change as soon as I know it needs changing? Waiting for New Years to make a resolution gives freedom to live in a less that perfect state. Biblically, once I know or become aware of the need for change, I need to act. Waiting to change for the better is never an option. An example of what I am writing about is in the following three bullet points. What would relationship be like if we waited?

• I will not be over my anger with you until next New Years!
• Although lying is wrong, I still have a few months more before I change!
• Stealing, next year I promise to quit, but until then it is OK because it will be my New Years resolution!

Each of these examples are silly in themselves, however, in essence, this is what a New Years resolution does, puts off to the future what needs to change today. Therefore, seeing it is January 2, 2012 here is my New Years resolution, "To change something that needs changing at the moment of discovery rather than waiting until January 1, 2013!" Happy New Years!

When Less is More!

When less is more!

During my studies this morning, I came across a wonderful case of ‘less is more’. So often, we aspire to be the important one, to possess the finest, or have the clout. However, that does not impress God. God habitually prefers those with less to do more. My example comes from Judges 6:15.

“’But Lord’, Gideon asked, ‘how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.’”

I am not sure how Gideon’s family members felt about this lowly kinfolk assessment, but for Gideon, it was how he saw it. This was his reality. Thankfully, God sees things differently; he looks at potential when we focus on mirrors. Through Gideon, a great victory was won because God took what was a limitation and created a miracle!

Each day, I try to apply this in my life. It is not who I am but who Christ is in me. After suffering a few heart attacks, I fully understand how limited we are, but God is unlimited. It is in His strength we live and move and have our being. Quit looking at your limits and focus on God’s might within you. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

New Lifestyle, Same Life

Five months have passed since my three heart attacks that rocked my world in Moscow, Russia. So much has happened since then it is difficult to put in words. After the placement of successful stints, two in Moscow, and one in Helsinki, Finland, Jill and I returned home to the Northwest for a seven-week medical leave and a chance to hug my granddaughters again.

Returning to the states had a greater emotional feeling for me now than ever before. Over the past 19 years, whenever Jill and I came home, I focused on my parents and food. However, with my mom and dad both with the Lord and the doctors placing me on a strict diet, those feelings changed. Seeing Alex and Val and their families at the airport to meet us was such joy. Just one month earlier, I did not know if I would have that opportunity again. Now, here I stood with tears in my eyes hugging my kids and grand kids. To me, this was a gift of God.

Enjoyable visits with family occupied much of my time over the next months. During this period, I began to see things in a new way, one where only a close encounter with death seems to allow. For the first time since entering the adult world, relationship took center stage over anything else. Although I still honor a strong work ethic, now my greatest joy is visiting with my children or going on a bicycle ride with two beautiful, little granddaughters.

On the somewhat funny side, I faithfully attend the local OGC meetings three times a week during my medical leave. Of course, you may not know what OGC means so I will explain the term. OGC or OLD GEISERS CLUB is the name I gave to my cardiology rehab department. I was the youngest person there with most of my fellow OGC members 30 years my senior. The goal of OGC was in teaching how to strengthen hearts and teach healthy life management skills. However, the primary focus of these weekly events seemed to be on pains, medicines and bathroom experiences. Although of value, at times I left feeling quite depressed that I was one of the OGC’s but I faithfully attended every session for the good of my heart!

After completing my required OGC attendance, my cardiologist gave me a 100% clean bill of health the last week of July. HERE IS THE MIRACLE: FROM NOT KNOWING IF, I WOULD LIVE THROUGH THE NIGHT IN MOSCOW MID-MAY TO HAVING A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH LATE JULY IS A GOD-GIVEN MIRACLE! Today, I am back to my normal self, although some may wonder if that statement is a contradiction of terms. A week after walking out of the OGC meeting for the last time, with the blessing of my cardiologist and Jill, I went on a 430-mile bicycle trip across parts of Washington, Canada and Idaho. For the first time in five years of long distance bicycle riding, I felt wonderful the entire trip. I love being a miracle of God!

Jill and I have now returned to our mission ministry at Caribbean School of Theology, getting ready to teach a wonderful group of Christian leaders/pastors the Word of God. Although we know without a doubt God’s direction for us to partner with this great ministry in the West Indies, much of our heart remains in Russia. In March/April, we return to teach a series of classes to students.

Jill and I know that many people around the world prayed for our miracle. We want to say, “Thanks” for those prayers. I believe I am here by the mercy of God, the prayers of many and because our work is not finished. Email us any time to visit; we are thrilled to hear from you. God bless!

Almost Indispensable and Irreplaceable

Almost indispensable and irreplaceable were terms I felt applied to my work and life, however, Monday night, April 11 I discovered a different reality.

Listening to one sentence from the night doctor at the European Medical Clinic in Moscow, Russia, ‘You have a serious problem with your heart and need to check into the clinic immediately,’ brought new reality, I’m not indispensable or irreplaceable! The next 15 hours went as quick as a breath. Decisions made, family contacted, hundreds praying and the 'almost indispensable/irreplaceable' one on a hard, cold table prepared for heart surgery. Life changes fast.

Six days earlier, working in my small apartment, the first of three heart attacks in six days hit. Although looking back, the warning signs had been there: loss of strength, shortness of breath, incredible heartburn, pressure on the chest and pain in the crooks of my elbows, I was not paying attention. Due to my personal agenda of important things, I pushed past all the signs and pain to complete my tasks. During these six days of immense heart problems I preached, lead staff meeting (during one of the heart attacks), carried a large folding table 100 meters, set up chairs, and dozens of additional ‘important’ little things.

Amazingly, even though we may not always understand the signs and walk blindly ahead, our loving heavenly Father is with us. As my gurney rolled across the cement floor into the cold operating theater, peace came over me. Never once did I wonder or worry about what happens next. I was in total peace that everything out of my control was fully in God’s control. Going into the procedure, I thought of my oldest grand daughter on a trailer behind my bicycle singing cute little songs this past summer as I peddled. What a precious memory to hold on to during those trying moments.

Thanks to the grace of God and the prayers of so many friends and family, everything went well. My doctors were successful and now back in that little Moscow apartment I can thankfully look forward to more bike rides with my grand daughters.

Life has great purpose and value as do each of us. Here is the problem, the idea that somehow we are indispensable and irreplaceable. Once we place ourselves as the ‘one of importance’, we can quickly discover how mistaken we are. We have been given a season to serve our family and friends while living for Christ. Indispensable and irreplaceable should not be how we ever see ourselves. No doubt, this was an important lesson for me these past days to understand.

In the Bible, Jesus tells Peter, “On this rock I will build my church.” Jesus is the indispensable and irreplaceable one, not me. At best, I am a provider for my family and caretaker of a church for a season.

Now the journey ahead of me requires faith and prayer as I prepare for more tests and heart stints this next month. Today, however, I enjoy day number eight since I learned my lesson on life. My prayer is that God will bless me with a wonderful long life with Jill, but I will look at each day as a gift not an expectation. May I enjoy many more bike rides with my grand kids!

Today I am so thankful for the prayers of family and friends, help of a caring hospital staff, and most importantly, my wife Jill. Jill you have been so strong, caring and filled with wisdom I re-discovered how blessed I am as your husband. Many played a valuable part in my survival. Thanks everyone!

Where have you been?

Where have you been is a question we hear often from friends and family. If we loose contact with a loved one, we often say "Where were you?". For the past four months you have have asked that question about us. Well, we have been busy in our ministry in Moscow, Russia.

Since arriving back in Moscow last summer, Jill and I have been active as lead pastors at the International Christian Assembly here in Moscow, Russia. The former pastor resigned last January and we offered to help until June 2011. Throughout the week, we are busy preparing and ministering in this wonderful church family. There are up to 50 nations that walk through the ICA doors any given Sunday. It is fun to preach to such a diverse group and Jill and I feel honored to have this time with them.

During the week, I work on my doctoral dissertation. This paper is the final step towards my doctorate. Although it is quite challenging, I must say, it has helped me immensely in many areas of my life and ministry. My goal is to have the paper done by February 2011. In case you are wondering, the paper needs to be between 120 and 150 pages in length and will address the question: Has the methods of today affected the message within the Assemblies of God church. It is a fun subject and one I hope will be helpful to the body of Christ.

Due to our schedule, my entries in the blog not are as often as in the past. Please keep us in your prayers as we travel, preach, study and live in Russia. God bless you.

There is not much one can do when the laws of the country you are ministering in changes the visa laws.

For most of our 19 years in missions, we have stayed in the country we were serving without needing to leave. However, two years ago the laws in Russia changed. Due to this change, all foreigners can be in the Russia 90 out of 180 days. This changed everything!

Many missionaries eventually left the country to other regions where this would not affect them. There was one way a person could stay in the country but it was difficult and few tried for the new temporary residency permits. December Jill and I went through all the hoops and completed everything required. What a process it was. I do not think I will do it again, but this July, we received those new permits. Yes, we can now stay in the country for up to three years!

September 2nd, after our sons wedding, we return to our apartment in Moscow to resume ministry. For those of you who were praying with us, thanks. We know our life and season of ministry is in God’s hands and trust in that fact. Now we can work without needing to leave every 90 days.

SOMETHING NEW: Jill and I will be serving as the interim pastors of the A/G International Christian Assembly (ICA) once we return until new leaderships found. ICA has close to 50 nations represented for an average Sunday service. Our first scheduled Sunday in the pulpit is September 5. We will still travel across Russia teaching in the regional schools, but whenever we are in Moscow, we will minister at ICA. Keep this church in your prayers for a new leader and for Jill and me as we serve them.In July we had the honor to be with my brother, Tom for his installation service at the United Methodist church in Plains, Montana. We were able to share about our mission. After service we visited at their home and this little baby deer came out of the woods along with his mother. We enjoy watching them for close to 20 minutes. Isn't the beauty of God's creation amazing? P.S. All the pictures are from the states while we waited for the word on our new visas.

Terence and Jill Hall, Missionaries in Moscow, Russia.

Volgograd, RussiaThis past month Jill and I were blessed to join the ministry team in Volgograd, Russia. We arrived on Friday evening and Saturday through Thursday involved in ministry. Saturday during the day, we enjoyed a wonderful sightseeing trip through Volgograd.

Ministry began Saturday night with the youth group.

We saw a strong group of young people who desire God to move in their lives and the lives of others around them. During the following days, we got to know some of them better and watch them minister in different settings.

If this group is any indication, big things are in store for the future church in Volgograd!

Once again, our students were the finest. I find it such an awesome blessing to teach such hungry people after God.

Most of the students are in some type of ministry so every question they ask comes from a felt need in their lives and ministries. Although you and I many never visit the communities they serve in, God is blessing them. Eternity will record all the results of their ministries.

My pray is that Acts 2:41 becomes a reality, “the Lord added daily to the church those being saved.”

Moscow, Russia

More than 30 people killed as two bombs exploded at different metro stations. Within the past two weeks, I was in both of those stations. Tomorrow we once again use this metro for travel to the Ministry Center. Pray for peace in a city covered in sorrow, fear and concern.

We know of no one personally among those killed, yet our hearts grieve for lost love ones.

Today in your prayers, please remember the families of wounded loved ones or killed. Ask God to direct Jill and me to be a help and voice of peace. We also, as always, ask for prayer for our safety as well.

Murmansk, Russia

Greeted by deep, deep snow with temperatures below freezing, Jill and I arrived in this winter wonderland called Murmansk.

Pavel, a former student from a class in Moscow four years prior, was waiting for us at the airport.

We arrived at our host’s home, Sergey and Kathleen, at 4:00 in the morning. They showed us to our room where we quickly fell asleep on the couch/bed.

Classes began Thursday morning, 9:00. The 32 students were ready for class with notebooks in hand. Some of the finest students we have ever had the honor to be with in our travels were in Murmansk, this Russian seaport city. Pages and pages of notes taken as students tried to record every thought we presented.

Believers packed both morning services on Sunday.

Every little space had someone pushed into it as they gather to worship the Lord and hear the Bible proclaimed. My message came from Matthew 9:9 and 10 where Jesus calls Matthew to follow. Although the auditorium was cold in temperature, the believers were warm and friendly and we felt at home.

With an invitation to return to teach this fall, we will see many of these pastors again. Murmansk is a difficult region of Russia where the life expectancy of a man is only 60 years old. Yet, in the middle of this area, God has raised up people to praise his name and proclaim the Good News of the Gospel.

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday, March 15th, Jill and I leave our little Moscow apartment and begin a long journey to the frozen north of Russia. Murmansk! It is the little red dot on the picture to the right. It is way, way up there! We plan on dressing very warm. Our first trip to this region of the world brings excitement and wonder. We know there are some wonderful pastor/students waiting for the classes. Doors of ministry opened for these students and the next 8 days we will hear them.

As we make this trip, please remember us in your prayers. We will have plenty of new pictures to share in one week from now. We return to Moscow March 23rd. Once again, it is an early flight that leaves Murmansk at 4:00 in the morning. Check back then and see what our pictures of the frozen city of Murmansk look like.

Our schedule will be teaching from 8:00 to 5:00 each weekday with services on Sunday. We have one day of rest before classes begin on Wednesday and also, we hope, on Saturday. This is the Russian winter wonderland!

Jill and I want to wish each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas! We pray for God to give you an exciting and rewarding 2010! For us, the past 12 months have been filled with exciting and challenging events. The first two that come to mind are the miracle of the birth of our second grand daughter and the healing of our first. We also are extremely proud and thankful for our children and the lives they have chosen to follow along with their family and loved ones. Winter has arrived!

At last winter has arrived in Moscow, Russia. Most every day we are greeted with additional snow, never in great quantity, but constant flurries of flakes. Over the season this daily covering can equal several feet. There is a reason everyone jokes about ‘Russian winters’!

During the past week we successfully turned in all our necessary papers for a residency permit which allows us to live in Moscow (and Russia) for up to three years. The miracle is - they accepted them! Although we do not know for certain, it seems like new permits with be in our Christmas stockings this year (actually May 7th is when we officially find out). Thanks to those who prayed with us for this to happen.
Leading up to Christmas we are teaching a class at the Moscow Theological Seminary. Many of the students in this class are pastors who desire to understand and communicate the Word of God better to the cities they have been called to.

Riga, Latvija

1993 Jill and I arrived in Latvija serving 9 years building relationships, planting churches and starting a ministry center. Last week we came back for two weeks of ministry and what an exciting time it has been. We have visited with so many pastors and former students that are now in ministry. Our first Sunday we preached in Broceni where Andrei and Evita are pastors, both of whom are former students.

During the week we teach at Latvija Bible College Ministry Center (LBCMC). Just over 35 students are studying in this class. We teach three to five hours per day. When these classes finish we hop in a van for a 50 minute drive to teach in a church school for a few more hours. Usually about 10:00 p.m. we return home.

Sunday we preached at one of our closest friend’s church, Nickolas Greb. Nickolas serves as the National Pentecostal church leader for Latvija. After our service we sat down and enjoyed a feast with them at a great Latvian restaurant, Lido.

This week we begin our final classes at LBCMC as well as evening classes in another church. It is a full week but what a pleasure to be able to visit and work alongside so many wonderful friends.

Thanks to Bethany Christian Assembly in Everett, WA! Due to their bighearted giving last fall (2008) we were able to completely remodel the guest professors’ residence at the Moscow Theological Seminary (MTI).

What a blessing this is to the school and guest professors! This is now a wonderful, clean and relaxing place for visiting teachers to rest amid days of ministry with the next generation of church leaders. No more will they feel the cold winter air blowing through the windows, sleep on old dilapidated beds or eat from a dirty broken down kitchen! To MTI and Jill and I this was a great miracle!

Already we have had those who have stayed there before and after the change come up and say 'Thanks'. We quickly reply, 'It was a great gift from friends at Bethany'!

May God give peaceful rest to all who stay in this apartment after days of ministry to leaders in Russia - for years to come!

Winter has arrived in Moscow. The earliest snow always brings with it the awareness of change in the forecast and the extended months of frosty, snowy and shorter days of light on the horizon. For us it represents a season of opportunity. It is during this time of year most of the Bible schools are in session across the country. These three months we teach in 3 different locations with 4 groups of pastors/workers. Every time we stand and face these wonderful leaders we recognize the reason it is possible, you! Thanks for allowing us this moment in time. (This is a picture of our first snow taken from our kitchen window yesterday).

It has been awhile since we last added anything to our blog so here we go. In the past two months we have…

…had a new grand daughter added to our family. Her beautiful name is Chayelle Noemie Amsing. We are so proud of her, her mom, dad, older and much wiser sister, Arialee!

...Enjoyed an early Birthday party for our son who turns 20 October 22. We are very proud of Alex and blessed to have him as our son. Next to him in the picture is Natasha - a wonderful young lady. They make a great looking couple!

…taught two classes for a total of 64 class hours at two Russian Bible schools in Portland that fall under the Moscow Theological Institute (Moscow, Russia) umbrella

…drove over 2000 miles for a host of missions services in many wonderful and giving churches, and finally,

…returned to Moscow, Russia yesterday to start ministering and begin our many travels here. In November we will have the honor of returning to the Bible School we planted 16 years ago in The Republic of Latvija only this time as a guest professor.

While visiting with my brother Tom we discovered that the setting on our blog did not allow anyone to leave a comment. We have now adjusted this so feel free to keep in touch by leaving a comment now and then.

Next week I travel to Portland, OR to begin teaching two classes over a 14 day period of time for a total of 64 class hours. This is in a Russian Bible College in Portland that falls under the covering of the Moscow Theological Institute. I am looking forward to meeting with the students and pastors during these two weeks.

Moose Alert!

During the months Jill and I have been home this summer visiting churches (every weekend speaking at a different location and then in September I teach two classes, 32 hours each in a Russian Bible college in Portland, OR) I try to ride my bike as much as possible. Close to our house is the “Coeur d’ Alene” bike trail. This is a gorgeous journey through the North Idaho Mountains.

Tuesday afternoon about 3:00 I took off for a two day journey. At 7:30 that evening (mile # 55 so far that day) I had to stop on the path due to a big moose that was blocking our way. Another biker was there first and together we watched the critter for about 10 minutes. He was not in any urgency but, unfortunately, I was. With light vanishing and close to 10 additional miles before my camp site I needed to keep riding.

On my bike is a little bell to let other rides know when I am passing them on their left. I thumped it a few times trying to ‘scare’ the moose off the trail. Nothing! Next I tried the old ‘stomp you feet’ ploy. Still, the big guy was not paying me any attention. Finally I thought I would clap my hands loud and that would scare him off and on I would go.

As soon as I clapped my hands the moose sauntered off the path and into the forest. At that instant I felt like a champ. Terence 1 – Moose 0!

Less than 3 seconds after the moose walked off the road he was back on…only this time in a full charge for me and my new riding buddy. I never realized how swift 100 yards can vanish. My new friend and I were off our bikes during this encounter and did not have time to remount and peddle so we began to scamper with our bikes as rapidly as possible. Of course there is no way to out run a angry moose…that I know.

My biker ally was shrieking, “what do we do, what do we do?” With no time to spare I remembered something said to me while in Alaska last month. “When facing a Moose show him size”. Now I am not certain that information was for moose, wolf or bear but we did it. Just when the moose was a dozen feet from smacking us I yelled, “Twist your bike sideways”. We both did it in a second and were then blocking the entire trail with our bikes in front of us.

This was our last stand. When we looked up in the course of turning our bikes the moose was within ten feet! However, no sooner did we turn sideways that the moose saw our combined size and took a razor-sharp spin to the right and down the mountain smashing trees as he went.

We were safe, but only with a few feet to spare!

I love all animals including moose. However, I do not really want to see one that close ever again. May the Lord watch over you today and keep you safe from all the ‘moose’ on your trail.

12. When we moved to Denver and found out how strong we both were in our faith
13. Our first and only church in Post Falls where we were pastors
14. The day you told me "we’re going to have a baby"!
15. The day we drove slowly home from the hospital with Valerie Kathleen Hall
16. The day we discovered we were going to have another baby, Alex
17. Our trip to Yellowstone with out little bubble camper and family of four

NAZRAN, Russia — A homicide bomber exploded a truck at a police station in Russia's North Caucasus on Monday, killing at least 20 people and wounding about 60 others, officials said.

The bombing was the deadliest in months in the restive southern region, denting Kremlin claims that the area was stabilizing after 15 years of separatist fighting in Chechnya and violence in surrounding provinces.

The attacker rammed the gates of the Nazran city police headquarters, in Ingushetia province, and detonated his explosives as police officers were lining up for a morning check, said Svetlana Gorbakova of the regional branch of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Prosecutor General's office.

Police had fired shots at the truck, but failed to stop it. The blast triggered a fire that raged for hours, destroying a weapons room where ammunition detonated.

A nearby apartment building and several office buildings were also damaged, and burned-out cars littered the street.

At least 20 people were killed, Gorbakova said, though official figures on the number of wounded varied. Gorbakova said 57 people were hurt, including 10 in critical condition. Ruslan Koloyev, the acting head of the Emergency Ministry's branch in Ingushetia, said on Rossiya television that 92 people were injured.

Once upon a time…so the story goes.

Our incredible 15 day bicycle expedition is complete and I am with my family once more. It was everything I thought it would be and more. More hills, more mountains, more blustery weather and more chilly than we imagined. But we made it and saw such exquisiteness that only God could fashion with a spread of colors beyond what an artist ever used.

Now that I am finished I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to some special people in my life:

My beautiful wife, Jill: not only did she support such a wild adventure and helped me pull it off she updated the blog every day taking my ramblings and made sense from them. Without her partnership and love I would not have wanted to go. Thanks Jill!

Climb, Climb Up Sunshine Mountain

We've already biked our way through Fairbanks and spent last night in beautiful Denali Park.

One of the things I have learned as we've ridden through wind, rain and fire (well, smoke from fires, anyway) is that you never know what is around the next corner. Sometimes as I am pushing to ascend yet another gargantuan mountain on my bicycle, I tell myself, "after that next corner up ahead it looks like the top; I can do it!". Then, I round that corner and what do I find? Another corner way off in the distance, calling to me that just around that bend is the top of this mountain. On and on this goes as I cover the Alaskan miles each day. It almost seems like a cruel joke played on me by the incomparable beauty of mountains, flowers, wildlife and the breathtaking sites around me. Sure, it's tempting to give up but I don't give up, I keep pedaling, hoping to see the top after I round the next corner. I anticipate the joy of completion: conquering a 6-8 mile hill at an 11% grade, even when physically I want to give up!

Life's journey sometimes feels just like that...one more corner & then things will be different; things will be easier. However, things do not always go as we plan, do they? Yet, we keep pushing on because we anticipate the joy of completion. Finally, just when you are afraid to look at what is around the next corner you see the gentle, downward slope! Around that last corner WAS the crest of the mountain you've been tackling! What excitement and joy it is to experience speeds of 41 mpg for five glorious miles with the cool wind blowing in your face and the sound of the bicycle tires whirring on the roadway. That joy of completion feels great.

So, for those of you looking at the next corner, hoping for a breather...take heart: the top will come.
As of today we've covered more than 400 miles! Now, we head back to Anchorage as our journey winds down. Safe pedaling to you! Terence

Sharing the Road

Today I had a number of people honk at me on the road! Since I've had a lot of time on my bicycle to think about it, I have placed the 'honkers' into two basic categories: "greeters" and "warners". Greeters I like. They encourage me and make me feel welcome on the highways of Alaska. Warners are another story entirely. I get the feeling that they wish I'd just stay off their road! Sometimes they wait for exactly the right moment to honk in order to make me jump. No, they do not make me feel welcome at all. Now I understand that it's quite possible that they are concerned about hitting me. HHHMMMM, That may be BUT when I am completely off of the roadway and a 'warner' is laying on the horn as they're whizzing by at well-over-the-speed-limit I am convinced that the truth is, some simply do not want us bicyclists on their road. It reminds me of a recent teaching I heard from Dary Northrup about the "Power of Your Welcome". How True! When you meet someone at church, be aware of the power you have to make them feel welcome. Don't hog the road! Honk, wave and maybe even flash a sincere smile! You never know what a difference it could make for their life!

We enjoyed Sunday gatherings at Living Waters Assembly of God in Delta Junction. We attended the regular service as well as the Russian language service. I had the wonderful opportunity to share God's Word in both meetings. God is Good! Terence

"Bear Alert"

200 miles and counting...
As we have traveled across Alaska we continually hear and see the signs of bear. Yesterday, we actually had a brown bear lumber across the road directly in front of us while we were bicycling! People are constantly warning us about taking caution and signs everywhere tell us how to behave or act when bear are around. I call this a healthy fear. I agree with each bit of advice I hear and do my best to heed to it all. This type of fear is beneficial to Tom and I as we sleep under the stars of this wild and untamed area of the state of Alaska.

In this picture we are being warned about two brown bears in the immediate area that were shot with pepper spay just a week ago! Not too comforting a thought when my top speed at that moment is a powerful 8 mph! Tom and I kept on biking until we were a good 10 miles away from that area.

Wouldn't it be cool if we had warning signs in our life letting us know that sin was in the area? Something like, 'Caution: Anger around the corner' or 'Danger: Unforgiveness nearby' or even, 'Beware, Lust seen lurking close by'. Of course, the warning system God provides for each of us is His Word, the Bible. If we pay attention to His signs throughout each day, we will be carefully guarded over by the One who sees the end from the beginning.

We'll be attending service at Living Waters Assembly of God in Delta Junction tomorrow. Hope you go to church with anticipation!

Awesome Alaska

Thursday, Day Four! We are biking our way through beautiful country and majestic mountain after mountain. Beautiful to look at, hard to pedal your way over! At times, I find that pushing the pedals of my friendly recumbent bicycle up and up and up yet another steep incline is just too much! So, that's when I "take my bike for a walk" and get off and push. I am enjoying the incredible scenery and spending time in the evenings around the campsite. My brother, Tom is the one who instigated this venture and we both are still a little surprised that we're actually here, in the heart of Alaska! We are eeking our way towards the town of Tok, which will be our first main stop. We've spotted one moose and are hoping to post pictures of bear, but only from a distance. So, I'm keeping my monocular and camera handy--OH, and the bear spray, too! Stay tuned for more photos!

Day One of the "Alaska Bicycle Adventure" can be summed up in one word: CHALLENGING!

We faced blinding headwinds and driving rain throughout our bicycling in very chilly temperatures. We started off from Anchorage around 11:00 in the morning and didn't stop pedaling 'til 9:30 that evening, when we reached the little town of Whittier. Although we were tired, soaked to the bone and sore, it was such a great feeling of relief to finally make it to our destination.

Reminds me of our journey of faith: sometimes we feel that everything is blowing against us and we're being tossed from side to side. However, deep inside we are confident that with God all things are possible and we continue to push on, one pedal after another. And, when we finally reach our goal, it will have been worth it all!

Special thanks to Pastor Ken and Sherri Buller in Anchorage! I so enjoyed their terrific hospitality and the opportunity to speak at their church Sunday morning.

Intense, Exciting, Fast, a First and Satisfying

That is how the preceding 14 days have felt. We have flown from Moscow, Russia to Ephesus, Turkey (where Paul writes to the Ephesians church) back to Moscow for all of 16 hours and then back to the airport for a flight to the Ural Mountain region in the city of Ufa for five days and back to Moscow. During this time we have taught/preached 33 times. Here are the pictures with captions:

The city of Ephesus where we receive Paul's Ephesians letter. This is an amazing place filled with such great church history. Standing between the pillars are Valerie and Jo along with one of the worlds cutest grand babies, Arialee. Valerie and Jo took vacation time to come and help with the children for this conference. Thanks, Kids!

Jill and I loved being able to have Val, Jo and Arialee with us for this conference. Valerie was caregiver to the little ones and Jo worked in the children's program. They both worked hard and were tired at the end but enjoyed the entire time.

Jill and I love this city.

It is where the Apostle Paul walked and spent time building a group of new believers in the faith. Some say that Paul may have rode horse across Turkey but either way, it was quite a difficult journey.

As you visit this land you have to admire the faith of Paul and those in the early days of the church. We are the fruit of their journeys.

From Turkey we traveled to the Ural Mountain region of Russia for five days of teachings. .We had 28 pastors/leaders in our class. I was impressed with their heart and willingness to serve even though it may cost them everything. While in this region I did something for the first time - ever - and I hope it will be the last.

I drank FERMENTED HORSE MILK!
My brother asked me what it tasted like. I could not come up with anything I have ever tasted that was even close to it. Those who live in this region believe it will give you good health. That I am not sure about...but...if staying healthy will keep me away for drinking it...I will stay healthy.

It is Saturday evening and we just sauntered through our flat entry following a five day conference in Izmir, Turkey. Tomorrow we re-pack and drive to a different airport (we use four airports depending on which sector of Russia we are traveling to). This jaunt takes us to one of the challenging regions of ministry where we will instruct pastors. In a week we return to Moscow at which time we will add more alongside many fresh pictures. Back in Moscow

Our last teaching trip was greatly successful and we returned late night Friday tired but excited. Thanks for your prayers. We will now be in Moscow for the next few weeks ministering at both the International Christian Assembly and Moscow Bible College. The next ministry trip we take will be in about four weeks to the rugged Ural Mountain region. More on that another day. For now, here are some pictures of our last outing along with a brief note about the photos. Enjoy-

Many fine students sat and listened to Terence teach a total of 64 hours in 10 days- they deserve a good grade for that alone. Most are pastors and all are in ministry serving in local home groups.

Preaching to the thousands in the Sunday services was truly enjoyable. They were such a recptive group and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Many of our students were there for these Sunday services as well.

Tomorrow afternoon Jill and I fly to teach two classes of leaders (about 50 will be in each group) along with a weekend service in one of our more challenging trips for this three month set. Each class runs 32 hours or two credit hours. So it will be 64 hours plus services. My main concern is for my voice – that it will keep strong and secondly for physical health. Once we return to Moscow around the 13th of May I will add more to our blog. For the next two weeks our time on the internet is limited due to our travels. Remember us in your daily prayers.

A Day's Travel

Sunday following ministering in the morning Jill and I caught a plane to Moscow for the next slice in our travels. At the airport outskirts the friend driving us was stopped by the law enforcement. To make an extremely lengthy narrative short they took our companion into the police station alongside the highway. At this time we have no inkling what is going on other than our plane is going to take off shortly and we are not on it.

For one complete hour Jill and I sat in the van while our friend was meeting with the police about an accident that had been resolved but remained on this regions information of cars to stop. Thankfully, after one hour of sitting, they permitted our friend to drop us off at the airport and then return to the station and complete the paper work.

With only minutes to spare Jill and I sat down in our plane seats on the flight to Moscow. Our friend, after dropping us off, went back to the station and early the next morning was at last free to return home. We arrived at our place of residence in Moscow early Monday morning as well – drained but very pleased to be back.

I guess you can say it was one more day in our travels. My daily prayer is becoming like this, “Lord, for today, let’s make it un-eventful”. Amen!

Biking To Russia, Two!

Last year I had the opportunity to ride a bicycle from Billings Montana to Kellogg, Idaho. What a magnificent expedition that was! All in all we covered 400+ miles in 8 days! That is a bunch of miles on a 20 year old bike. Here are some of the pictures of that trip. With me were my oldest brother, Thomas, brother-in-law, Dave and best friend, Jay Norman.

One of the motives for this trip was to raise cash for our effort in Russia. We were delighted to raise about $2000.00 for that one week outing. Coming up in 86 days is our second trip to raise funds for the work we do across Russia. This time it is in Alaska where we will trek close to 850 miles! Each evening we sleep outdoors and eat the victuals crammed in our bike gear. For sure it is an adventure!

The trip looks like this: Anchorage to Whittier, Whittier to Valdez, (by ship) Valdes to Tok, Tok to Delta Junction, Delta Junction back to Anchorage

Along the way I will have a mug of coffee with pastors (5 are in the plans) and speak on weekends (three churches). This excursion will last about 14 days.

I want to let you know now about the trip and give you a chance to once again partner with me as I ride for Russia. Some of the ways people give are by mile (.25 per mile= $212.50 as an example), per day or just a gift for completion. Anything is wonderful and will enable Russian pastors and future church leaders to receive training from God’s Word.

It seems life comes at you in gushes. Here’s what I mean: In the past 17 days we have been on, in or done---- *Four planes at five airports *Two states (Idaho and Washington) *Four countries (USA, England, Ukraine and Russia) *Guests at two hotels – one was aged, musty and with a bathroom that was almost to small to brush your teeth in that I enjoyed for five days (plus I threw out my back – yuck!) *Passed through three customs controls (England, Ukraine and Russia) *Registered with a city government (Moscow) *Set up home, remodeled and painted a small bedroom in Moscow *Preached for the Easter service at the International Christian Assembly (Moscow)*Participated in three days of Team Meetings with other missionaries *and we now are packing to fly in the morning to St. Petersburg for two weeks of ministry. You see what I mean about how life gushes at you? Anyway, thanks for your many prayers. We know it is the hand of God that enables us to do what we are called to do and without you we would be limited. Kiev to Moscow

In a few hours we will head to the airport for our flight from Keiv where we have been for the past 5 days in meetings and head to Moscow our 'home' away from home. Point A to Point B. This is the customary manner of travel Jill and I do as we visit churches. Directly from one location to another with very little pleasure sandwiched between. However, this weekend we busted the mold and enjoyed an extra day of travel along with some impressive sights. Because we were in the beautiful Olympic Peninsula region of the northwest we spent one extra day looking over the ocean and enjoying a little rest and relaxation.
These are some of the pictures we took along the way. The deer are in their natural habitat although quite tame but saw no whale…still too early in the year. But it was a wonderful weekend.

We did have a service in Forks however our morning schedule at Seabeck was canceled due to heavy snow…

Bethany Christian Center 2009 Missions Convention

Saturday (March 7th) we traveled the snowy Snoqualmie Pass to Bethany Christian Assembly in Everett, WA. We crossed the pass during a snow storm with near whiteout conditions. Just after we started to ascend up the pass they closed it to only those vehicles with chains. Of course I had taken mine out before our trip knowing that winter was past! This was Bethany Christians annual Missions Convention that we were invited to be involved in.

Jill and I greatly enjoyed this chance to visit and share our vision/work in Russia during these two days. Another enjoyable part of the weekend was being able to reconnect with missionary friends also there for the convention.

Sunday evening we were honored to be the guest speaker for the Missions banquet. I am not sure how many were there but there was seating for over 300 and most every chair was filled. Everything about this weekend was planned exceedingly well.

The project focus for the evening was to help raise funds for remodeling the Guest Quarters at the Moscow Theological Seminary in Moscow, Russia. Not only did they raise enough to finish the work in Mosow but also to help other regional school in Krasnodar (also named Bethany) with their guest quarters. Wow! What a wonderful miracle. Thanks Bethany for inviting us and doing so much to help carry out the Great Commission around the world and for helping rebuild the Guest Quarters in Moscow and Krasnodar!

Travels

This past Sunday, March 1st, was our first visit to Terrace Heights Assembly in Yakima since we began our missionary journey 17 years ago and we hope more will follow. What a wonderful and friendly group of believers enjoying the blessing of God in their church. When we have opportunity to build new partnerships with local fellowships or friends we are excited and pray for God to bless them many times over in ministry and provision.

Sunday evening we were with friends we first met while pasturing in Post Falls, Idaho many years ago, Keith and Susan Hixson, who are the Pastors of Ellensburg First Assembly. It was enjoyable being able to reconnect with them along with time to share in ministry and fellowship together.

Next week it is on the road again for us to Bethany Christian Center for their annual Mission’s Convention and March 31st we return to Russia. Keep us in your prayers as we begin to transition back to our ministry and travels across Russia.

Travels...the Northwest

Traveling the stunning northwest is always a fantastic time. The past few weeks we have been to a number of impressive areas visiting those who have stood with us the past years and others who may in the days ahead. Either way, we have been blessed by them through their prayers and friendships.

Our first stop along the way was in Port Angeles where our partnership began when we set out in missions 17 years or so ago. If you have never visited the Assembly of God church in this harbor city do so some day. The visit is well worth a weekend away and the church is exciting.

Some good friends of ours pastor in Mossy Rock, Darrel and Linda Stavros. Jill and I had never been to the church here before and greatly enjoyed our service. Attendance Sunday night was great and meeting new friends is always a delight.

Coeur D Alene Assembly, our third stop, is our home church where both Alex, Valerie and her husband Jonathan and Arialee our beautiful grand daughter attend.

Both Alex and Valerie are part of the worship team: Alex on drums and Valerie helps on piano. (Did you know that I was an intern youth pastor at Coeur d’ Alene in the late 70’s early 80’s?)

Lastly was our return visit to New Hope Assembly in Pinehurst where Jill and I began our journey together and she started her ministry as a youth pastor. What great memories for us in this wonderful church.

This past week I had the pleasure to trek to two events in the Northwest. First was the Small Church Pastors Summit in Nisqually, WA. This gathering of pastors is an annual event provided by the Northwest Network of the Assemblies of God to encourage, present useful helps and choices of workshops centered on the needs for those that are located in small communities, new fellowships, or small but growing churches.

It was wonderful to be involved in this two day summit and be able to help with one of the workshops that Dave Cole lead. Visiting with those who partner with us and others we had not had the chance to meet yet was just a great occasion for me.

Sunday I was in Pomeroy, WA for Sunday school and morning service. I truly enjoyed this time with these valued partners. I do want to say thanks to Pomeroy Assembly for walking with us in our Russian journey. You have been a blessing to us!

Home again!

Three months, 70 classes/services, 10 different beds and 11 planes, our calendar was full but blessed! We enjoyed ministering to many pastors in four regions of Russia. Each time our travels take us to a region of Russia I find myself so touched by the hearts and commitments of those who we are sent to train. These men and women serve God so devotedly – trusting, evangelism, and even in sharing their possessions. Our prayer is for God to bless them and their church families.

April 15th we return once more to Russia with a jam-packed schedule of teaching and ministry. It will be a full schedule but we are honored to serve in this manner.

St. Petersburg, Russia: land of 100 bridges

The temperatures have dropped, cannels are ice-covered and our STL vehicle resists running due to the cold (it also is a diesel). This is St. Petersburg in winter. Beautiful, snowy and arctic! Here are a few pictures Jill and I took this past week as we attended assorted events. Feel free to leave a comment if you desire...we love to hear from you!

Along with training pastors and leaders in regional Bible Colleges much of what Jill and I do is relational with the people and church leaders of Russia. It is fascinating to listen to their narrative of how God reached out to them. Some of their journeys into faith are pretty incredible and at times difficult. We have been blessed by seeing their faith in action and watching God work in and through their lives.

Except for few occasions, Jill and I typically take the metro to and from the places we visit in St. Petersburg. For the most part the pictures of the city have been taken on those jaunts. At times you become so chilly that you go into stores to “look” for something just so you have a second to warm up. Bundling up is the rule whenever you endeavor to venture outside. We will be back in the states in January for three months due to our visa requirements. Speak about adventure – today we went to go to church – generally this is no big problem. However, when we carried all the things we need to bring each Sunday to service (piano, power point system, 10 liters of water, etc.) our vehicle was blocked in. Where we park is in a court yard that fits 4 cars – and not one more. Even then I have to back out and through an undersized tunnel on to the main street. So I kindly honked my horn for 15 minutes to no avail - although I am sure I will get no best wishes from my neighbors for the New Year. No one is even awake in the apartment complex yet – except for after my horn concert. To make a long story short – we hired a taxi to church with all our equipment and arrived just as service was to begin. We returned home by taxi as well and of course our car is still blocked by our fifth friend. Life is always fascinating here.

Overseas living presents an abundant quantity of challenges from foreign language acquisition to cultural diversity. One further change not given as much consideration but still is a new learning curve is simply this, “What is it?”
When you set out for your preferred grocery store and search for the well known items you use, like breakfast cereals or cake mixes, you saunter to that unmistakably marked isle and select your items. Not long ago I was in a huge store in Idaho and tallied no less than 50 brands of cereals and in excess of 100 sorts of hair products (do we actually require that many special combinations?).

However, here we do not quite have that predicament of choice but rather what is it that we are choosing?

So, let me show you various pictures of things we buy here and are in our home. In fact we took these pictures from things we found in our kitchen shelves. Ok, ready? Here we go with a new game called: “What is it?” The answers are beside or under the next picture to give a break between the four photo's in this article and what each item is. Home sweet home!

St. Petersburg, Russia! It is so satisfying to be home again in the apartment we are living in for the next weeks. As a rule when I travel to unpredictable regions I try not think a great deal about the protection issues until returning to a safer environment. Then it becomes clear. No more do you see the soldiers with machine guns in the streets or at the markets. You do not have as much a sense of being watched or listened too when out and about the town.
Once back in a safe location the airport security is much calmer than in the other area and the security checks needed to get through in order to leave are simpler. However, on Friday afternoon as we prepared to return home by plane I had a brief dilemma.
A paper stating I was registered in a certain city was missing from my passport and the custom officials would not let me through without it. Jill had hers in hand but we could not locate mine. I started to hunt through my briefcase and pockets – it was not there – the guards, two of them, gaze as I searched and searched. As time clicked by – with no luck in finding the essential paper – an additional guard, training in a new person, came over (marvelous - now there are four of them watching!). This latest guard looked at Jill's papers again and in doing so found my papers in with hers. With the paper in hand they released me and we made it through for our flight back. Without that paper I would still be there in a holding cell (what a polite way of saying that) working through the US government.

Whew! After we made it through customs we sat down to rest a moment allowing my heart beat to slow down from the stress of the episode. Moments before we had reached the customs desk Jill over heard one guard say to another, "Have the foreigners come through yet"? So just knowing they were looking for us added a little anxiety to the total event.

So let me just say once again, it feels great to be home!

Here we are in Mikhailovka, Russia, thouroughly involved in our 2nd full week of teaching Bible School students. How well we are reminded of the difficulties of this area and are so thankful for your prayer. Especially pray for our health needs, as this heavy schedule of teaching and much travel is not easy. We arrived here at 5:30 am, stepped down the 4 large steps from the train directly into wet cement! It will be a special memorial for us, since the cement may be on the wheels of our carry-on bags for quite some time... We drove 2 hours to join the church here for their Sunday morning service and our faith was energized by the enthusiatic worship! Of course, our faith was already pretty strong after that drive on foggy, winding roads, where on-coming cars are coming at you full speed, only to jump back into their own lane just in the nick of time---didn't we use to call that "playing chicken"? Anyway, we made it here safely and thank God for His goodness. We will connect back with you via this blog spot next week, when we are back in the big city. There will be lots of wonderful pictures and stories of God's goodness. God's Peace to You!

No hot water...and get ready to run!

This morning we woke up to no hot water. Our system is joined to the entire neighborhood so if one does not have hot water – no one has hot water! So, the basic pleasure of a shower is changed to an icy water experience. It makes you wake up so much quicker for the new week ahead of you.

In a few moments I leave for the Monday morning team meeting (International Christian Assembly) then on to a regional pastors meeting with my Russian Brothers. This will be the first time I attend this gathering since arriving last month. It will be pleasant to re-acquaint with ministry friends.

Tomorrow Jill and I commence our extended journey. The precise travel plans are:

Fly to Moscow from St. Petersburg, November 25th where we have three days of team meetings. Much of our conversation will be on how to work within the new visa laws and perhaps present some inspired ideas.

Fly to Krasnodar from Moscow, December 1st - 5th where I teach a 32 hour class on Biblical Missions. Throughout the week we will be in evening ministry in local churches.

Train for 15 hours from Krasnodar to Volgograd then take a car to Mihkailovka, December 8th – 12th, where I teach a 32 hour class on Church Administration. We arrive in Volgograd at 5:30 a.m. then spend three hours traveling by car to Mihkailovka where we minister that morning. Again, during the week there will be ministry in various local churches.

Train for 26 hours from Volgograd to Ufa (of course you cannot forget the three hours by car from Mihkailovka), December 13th – 18th, where I speak at a regional pastors forum for two days and Jill ministers at a Women’s conference.

Fly from Ufa to Moscow and on-going the next day back to St. Petersburg, December 18th. In all:
• Roughly 6,000 miles
• 80 plus hours of teaching/preaching
• Five major cities
• Ministering to 100’s along the way

This is why we came and this is why you sent us. What a joy it is to empower those who have committed so much to the cause of Christ. For the journey you have sent us on we say, “thank you”. It is an honor representing you here and in this way. Next week we hope to add another “video” message for you. Keep us in your prayers!

Following our Sunday morning service this past weekend we invited as many from the church as wanted to come to join us at our residence for foodstuff and fellowship. Jill and I (although mostly Jill) prepared a hefty quantity of spaghetti along with water, pop, coffee, tea and many sweets then stood back and open the door. We had a swarm of guests from numerous countries.
I do not suppose the architect of this structure ever planned on so many people in one apartment. Either way, it was fantastic. Every last morsel was gobbled up and all enjoyed an extended occasion to visit with one another. The picture (left) is of some of the students that came.

Now it is Wednesday and winter has arrived. Yesterday we walked about 5 miles in below freezing weather to the center of St. Petersburg. It was frosty. Much of our journeys to and from locations here are by foot. So anytime we venture out it is bound to be a hike of greater than 4 miles (and that just gets us to the underground subway that they call ‘metro’ and back to our apartment again). It keeps us in shape!

Tonight we have a mid-week Bible study at our apartment and I will be taking my text from Matthew 5:1-2, 38-44. Verses 1 and 2 prepare us for the next 107 verses (or all of chapters 5-7). In those first few verses we see at least two things of interest: 1) A principle for church building, and 2) The power of mentoring. From there we shift to verses 38-44. It will be a pleasurable night to visit with the Word as the hub of our conversation.

The Importance of a Well Balanced Meal

Once Jesus asks Matthew to follow Him (Matthew 9:9) they go to his house for a huge get-together with Matthew’s friends and workmates and have a feast. Why?

Throughout the ministry of Christ you come across him reaching out to people where they are and just as they are. He does not invite them to church for a great message by him or one of his disciples rather - where they are at - that on the spot moment - he befriends them.

We see this time and again in Christ’s ministry. I guess this is an excellent model for me in today’s world, first become the friend then introduce them to a much more significant friend than I will ever be, Jesus.

This is my message today for the International Christian Assembly (ICA) from Matthew 9:10. Typically I do not have titles on my messages, however if I did it would be: “The Importance of a Well Balanced Meal.”

What a beautiful city, St. Petersburg, Russia

Hello. Yesterday we enjoyed our opening day of partnership with ICA and it was fantastic. In the audience were people from:
• Australia
• Belarus
• Finland
• China
• Chad
• Russia
• America
• Zimbabwe

These were the ones I had a chance to meet up with during the morning other nationalities were there also that I did not have a chance to visit with. This week we will get to know a mixture of others who attend ICA while we attend various meetings. Tuesday is our first staff meeting, Wednesday Jill attends a women’s Bible study. On Friday the invitation was given out for a time of fellowship at our apartment with worship practice to follow Saturday evening. Yes, it sounds like it will be a fun week. On Thursday we will work on the legal side of our St. Petersburg registration.

We thank you for your prayers yesterday. We are honored to serve here while the regular pastors are in the states along with our normal ministry of teaching in the Bible Schools and Pastors Conferences across this part of Russia. Your prayers are so important to us. Thanks for that blessing of strength to us and our ministry.

It is a holiday here in Russia so most official offices are closed. Jill and I just returned from a three hour walk around the neighborhood to see what is about. The pictures added for this blog are from that stroll.

Why Matthew?

In 50 minutes Jill and I will depart the apartment where we are staying to speak at the International Christian Assembly of St. Petersburg. This will be our first service there. It is exciting to be able to address such an out of the ordinary group of people that really do come from the four corners of the earth.

In the International churches you have people that lecture in Universities, work at Embassy’s, learn in cross cultural schools and are in business. It is an assembly of people from numerous and unique walks of life that are in varying stages of individual journeys of faith. It is with that understanding the message today comes from the conversation between Jesus and Matthew when he first called him. Of course, the main two questions of that entire conversation are:

• Of all the people in this part of the city, why does Jesus focus on Matthew, who Jesus has not yet met, and then invites Matthew to follow him? And second,
• Why does Matthew walk away from his job to follow someone he has only met this first occasion?

If you have not discovered the answers to this question join us this morning for the message here in St. Petersburg. We will start in one hour. Otherwise you can write me and ask what the answer is if you desire.

This week we have one enormous challenge that is mandatory by Russian law and that is to get registered within the city you reside. Pray that the process goes well and by Friday (the required time to have this registration) we are set. Thanks!

We have arrived in St. Petersburg

It is Saturday night and tomorrow I preach my first sermon since returning at the International Christian Assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia. Our journey this week took us from our home in Post Falls, Idaho to our final weekend of services in Yelm Christian Center and Anacortes First Assembly. This first picture is of the view from the entrance to first Assembly. To me it is one of the finest church views in America. We had such a wonderful time in both churches and it was a great way end to our stateside travels. All across the land we were blessed by the kindness of some many. We do thank God for you.

Monday we enjoyed time with our kids and nephew Jeremy and his wife Leanne (Johnson). On the way over to Seattle we stopped by the gorge for Valerie and Jonathan to see this spectacular view. We drove to Seattle so they could visit their cousins and drive our car back home again on Tuesday.

Once we finished our final services we headed to the SeaTac airport Monday after one last meal with our kids. Our flight took us from Seattle - London - Moscow then on Friday by train to St. Petersburg. It has been a long week but we are finally here.

Jill and I want to say thanks for all who remembered us this week as we said ‘good-bye’ to our family. Your prayers made it easier – although grand dad did have a few tears in his eye saying good-bye to his first and only grand daughter.

Getting ready to drive away...

Tomorrow Jill and I embark on a journey unlike anything we have experienced in our life; going overseas without our kids. For the first time in approximately 17 years we will return to Russia without Valerie and Alex.

Valerie is now married to Jonathan with a beautiful baby named Arialee and Alex is 19 and in his first year of college. The empty nest time of life is here!

For years I knew this day would appear. I did not know how I would feel but here it is the night before driving away from our home and family. Although Valerie and Alex are great and will do well it is incredibly hard for me. Jill and I raised our kids for this day and now we must show confidence in God. Many of you have made this journey already and identify with my feelings tonight. We are not worried but rather just in need of your prayer over the next few weeks as the Lord reminds you of us.

“The steps of a righteous man are order by the Lord.” This promise we believe and know is true. Thanks for your prayers!

Yesterday we celebrated our son’s 19th Birthday. Alex is a first year student at North Idaho College and works at a local Starbucks. We are very proud of Alex in countless ways. Besides being a student and working he serves on the worship team playing drums at Coeur d’ Alene Assembly.

Happy Birthday, Alex and have a great year! We are proud of you and love you greatly.

Counting the days

October 27th

21 days! A lot can happen in 21 days. It is in that span of time Jill and I board the plane for our return to Russia. St. Petersburg, Russia to be precise. We are excited about our return to the land we have spent so much of our lives and ministry in. We still require additional monthly support but our confidence is in God to provide a miracle!

During the past 10 days three of our missionaries in the southern regions of Russia were told they must depart Russia by December 10th and one of our single gals in Siberia has been told to be at the visa agency this week to “answer” a few questions about her visa. We feel the concern and necessity to return. Please continue to pray these friends and us in the coming days.

Psalm 67:2 That your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations

Our work is before us and the challenge of the Bible: Make God known in all the earth. We want to say thanks to all those who help us fulfill this verse and the call of God on our lives.

October blues!

Jill and I are getting geared up to fly to Moscow, Russia October 27 and then on to St. Petersburg that Friday to preach on Sunday the first of numerous messages. This will be an exciting week for us. It is always wonderful returning to the place where God called you. For us that place is Russia.

However, this month, October, is one of the most difficult for me personally. It is the month before leaving that everything changes among family, friends and you. They all desire as much of those ‘last days’ as possible knowing that you will be gone for a length of time where they can not see or visit with you easily. It is difficult for them and us to face that good-bye moment. In addition both Valerie and Alex will not return with us for the first time in nearly 17 years! This is the hard factor of missions.

Although Jill and I travel to some extreme areas in ministry –to me this is more challenging. Bearing all this in mind, we are grateful for the countless friends and family who make this dream possible. So here is the ‘sweet sorrow’ we face this month: hating to leave but yet excited to go.

I say all of this to simply ask you to pray for us as we pack, visit, say our good byes and do a modest bit of crying. We are appreciative for every one of your prayers knowing God hears and answers them.

Good Times With Good Friends

Saturday night we returned to Tucson for a reunion with friends from my days as a youth pastor there. It was fun catching up on lives and seeing how God has blessed and provided for each of us through the many years. It was about 30 years ago that I served as youth pastor in Tucson. It is amazing that none of us have grown any older!

At 5:00 pm tonight we returned to Post Falls, Idaho safe and sound and just a slight road weary following our excursion to Arizona where we had the opportunity to see numerous friends and visit some great churches. It was our immense honor to be in these fellowships and present a good testimony of the journey we walk in the neighborhood God has designed us for. Thanks for making sure we never walk alone.

During this journey we visited with Tim and Debbie my brother and sister-in-law. Thursday night Jill spoke to the church Tim and Deb have served for the past 13 years, Evangel Worship Center, and presented our ministry vision.

Skunk...vs...dog

Looks can be deceiving. This diminutive fellow, Buddy, is my brother Tim's new dog. They have only had him for a few weeks and he is an exceptionally mellow little dog. When we arrived yesterday Buddy came and sat with me for a few hours as I caught up on some computer work. He was so pleasant and supple.

Last night as we got ready for bed Buddy was in the back yard meeting his new neighborhood friend. This one happened to be a skunk! I am sure Buddy looked at this stripped fellow citizen and thought this could be a wonderful friendship. So without much hesitation he went over to introduce himself. However this 'skunk' neighbor turned his back to Buddy and clearly did not desire to pursue friendship with the cuddly new backyard, four legged dog. What Buddy did receive was a close up spray of skunk smell.

The worse part of the story is still to come. Once Buddy was sprayed he ran thought the pet door right into the house, living room, hallway rolling on the carpet to get the smell off. However, rather than removing the smell off himself he spread it all around the house. It was the worse smell I have ever experienced close up.

This was my first experience of sleeping with the strong smell of skunk. To say the least, it is not one that I will long for again!

Right now Buddy is being groomed (shaved) and the carpets have been cleaned (but they still smell). One more experience for my traveling journal. The best part of the entire event was my brother Tim laughing until 2:00 in the morning as he worked to get the smell out of the carpet. Keeping things in proper perspective will help us realize - some day this will make a good story.

Sunday we will be at Glad Tidings in Tucson before returning back to Post Falls. Keep us in your prayers.

Friends and Family

Every time I travel to Arizona I get to see both family and friends. Tuesday morning Jill and I were able to have breakfast with one of my mentors in life: Rev. and Mrs. Virgil Jones. Pastor Jones was the lead/founding pastor of the great Victory Assembly in Tucson where I served as youth pastor when I was young. He then went on to be the Arizona Superintendent. Today they minister in churches all across Arizona. Thanks Pastor Jones for your investment in my life and ministry!

Wednesday on our way to Joseph City Foursquare for services with Wallace and Lucy Roberson, Jill and I met up with our nephew and his wife, Joey and Mandy. It was Jill and Mandy's first time to meet even though Joey and Mandy have been married for almost five years. One of the challenges we face by living overseas is missing out on family weddings. What a joy to spend a bit of time with this awesome couple.

Hover Dam, Arizona

What an amazing view! This was our first visit ever to the Hover Dam just inside the Arizona boarder. Although we only had a few monents to stop and look around it was worth it. Some day I would enjoy being able to visit again with time to stay for a day or two and then take the tour(s) that are available. When you see something like this you realize what can be accomplished if people have a plan and work together!

Arizona ... on the road again!

Wednesday Jill and I leave for yet another trip. Ths time to the beautiful state of Arizona where we are scheduled in 7 churches/groups in 8 days. Each of these locations are with friends we have met over the years and feel blessed for their partneship with us.

Years ago I served as a youth pastor at Victory Assembly in Tuscon. Many wonderful memories. This will be the first time Jill will be with me in Arizona so we are looking forward to this journey.

Keep us in your prayers.

By the way, we are now 50 days away from returning to Russia. We are still in need of additional monthly pledges, however, we know God sees our needs and will provide.

Take off...October 27th

October 27th Jill and I board a plane in Seattle to continue our 17 year journey of missions in Russia. Between November and January we will travel to four regions of Russia. Most weekends you can find us in St. Petersburg where we will minister at the International Christian Assembly while their pastors are in the states renewing visas. However,in December we will spend three weeks going to the southern part of Russia where our teaching ministry will take place at three different regional schools.

On each of these trips we will teach or preach over 32 hours in a four day span of time. It is difficult to maintain your energy level except for the fact that those who attend these sessions are so excited to hear the Word of God. Their excitement rubs off on us, making it a pleasure to serve in this manner.

This picture is from one of the groups I taught last year and where we again will teach in December. These are great students – most of them serve as full time pastors or church leaders.

Still Busy...and Traveling

Since returning home from our time in Wy. we have been travleing in the Northwest. So far we have been to Solid Rock Community Church in Covington, Wa. , Oakville, Wa and the past Wednesday in Toledo, Wa. Thanks to each of these wonderful churches for their prayers and support.

This week I am in Newport, Wa and in Fruitland, Wa.

Enjoy your holiday weekend and drive safe. Next week we will have our schedule for returning to Russia. We also will have some of the information concerning our teaching schedule in December.

The last day of our visit in Wyoming was great - speaking in two wonderful churches where we have developed special friendships. We are encouraged by the many great pastors and families across the Wyoming district. This last week we were able to drive from one side to the other holding 10 different meetings in all (7 for preaching, one board meeting, one lunch and one prayer meeting). Yes, it was a busy week!

My final day of services was at Buffalo with Pastor Schaberg (and his family) and at Rawlins where I had the chance to re-connect with a young friend, Zack, who preached his first sermon at about the same age I did many years ago. Zack, keep up the good work and it is great to have you as a friend.

Thank you to all the churches across Wyoming that opened up their homes and hearts to us - and all the good food. It was truly our honor.

What an interesting day this was! We began by enjoying lunch with the pastor and board of the Christian Center in Saratoga. We had a such a good time of fellowship. From there we drove to Denver where we were caught in a hail storm that was so severe that it felt like our car windows would break! However, we made it safe and sound and are now ready for another day of meeting with friends.

Jill and I enjoyed visiting with our church family at Rock Springs. One of the church families brought an entire box of tasty root beer for everyone to enjoy as I spoke. Of course, there were also other goodies to enjoy. Once again, we are blessed by the kindness of our church family.

A Trip of Faith

IDAHO! Home again – and it feels like a miracle. Tonight I will enjoy being home with my family and sleep on a real bed and eat a normal meal. It is great to be home. Many of you expressed a desire to help me on this "Biking to Russia" idea as I have visited with you in churches and meeting places across America the past four months. Thank you for your willingness to stand with us. We believe in our work in Russia and are pleased to be partners with so many wonderful people.

2008 "BIKING TO RUSSIA"

What a wonderful feeling it was to pull into St. Regis last night at 5:30 Montana time. 70+ miles in one day! Our trip was a success and we fulfilled this incredible excursion ahead of schedule. This last day brought one unexpected bump in our path however: we took an incorrect turn somehow and ended up riding an additional 8 miles through back country roads (many of them dirt and over a mountain pass). At one point I was so tired that I had to walk alongside my bike and push it up the hill. The temp was in the mid to high 90’s.

Here is what I learned from this ‘extra’ mile in our last day passage: as hard as the trip may get, the prize of reaching the finish line is well worth it. Entering our destination city of St. Regis, Montana gave me a feeling of immense satisfaction. In our Christian journey we frequently make mistakes but if we still press on the prize of heaven will be well worth it.

Jesus told us “He was going away to prepare a place for us”, and to “keep our eyes on the prize”. This is just what I had to do during those last miles…keep looking towards my finish line. This is what we need to do in our Spiritual lives when things get hard or we are on the back roads of life.

Thanks for reading and may God give us His peace as we look towards our eternal reward.

We're all in this Together

Someone (Tom) told me that after the 4th day of riding, I would be adjusted to a rhythm of riding and I would start feeling good. He lied.

By the time we finally reached Missoula on Saturday afternoon, my entire body melted. The final 9 miles were the most difficult and all the riding was against the wind---AGAIN!

For brief moment,though, I received an unexpected burst of strength due largely to the appearance of a HUGE DOG that mistook me as a skinny, running deer! For about 500 meters I seemed to be passing even the cars along the road as I envisioned myself being feasted upon by this big brute of an animal. However, I did outrun him and for that I am very grateful!

Here is what I learned today: even though at times I felt all alone on this long, up hill road today, I wasn’t. Both Tom and Jay were somewhere on the same road, experiencing similar challenges. In our Christian walk at times we feel our trek is much different than anyone else, but there are many others facing the same or similar difficulties.

I realized today that I am not alone. Many believers walk beside me and of course, Jesus is walking with me,too. What better journey could I be on than this? I am thankful that Tom and Jay are here so we can face these challenges together. I also find great reassurance in the fact that Jesus is with me.

So here is a word for you today: YOU ARE NEVER ALONE! Friends are there and Christ will never leave you. Take heart, you are in His care. Bye- Terence

333 Miles

Today we will complete 333 miles (hopefully), if we reach our destination of Missoula, MT. Last night was spent in the little town of Ovando, MT. Have you ever attempted something with an honorable reason that you later discovered was unwise, no matter how kind and good your motivation was? That's how I'm feeling about my choice to use my Dad's bike! It is old: over 30 years old, and it now has only 2 working gears and, worse of all, it's NOT a road bike! It is a mountain bike! So, I work twice as hard as I need to, to get from point A to point B. I watch my brother, Tom, coasting along on his recumbent bicycle up and down the miles and miles of mountains and valleys of Montana and oh, how I wish I could change the decision I made a few months back NOT to rent the same bike. I confess to envying his nice, cushy 'normal' seat. Why did I think it would be honorable to use my Dad's mountain bike for this trip?

If you feel like you're "spinning your wheels", be encouraged! Don't give up! God is with you and He will stick to His promises for you and your life. Maybe you've made a few poor choices but God and His Word don't change. He is completely dependable. I'm enjoying the ride, through it all, taking the time to lift my head and see the beauty all around.

Day 4

Wow! Am I pooped! We are in a wide-spot-on-the-road/hay field somewhere about 35 miles west of Helena. So many mountains! They seem to never end. I am looking forward to climbing into my comfortable sleeping bag! More news tomorrow as we pedal on...

Ups and Downs

43 miles and some impressive mountains!! Today we went up and down four mountain passes. One thing I discovered: I prefer going down the mountain rather than the hard climb UP! Reminds me of our faith journey: we lean towards our natural giftings because those are the things that come more easily. However, today I experienced over and over that there was no way to enjoy the wonder of the downhill ride without first pushing up the long ascent to the top of the mountain. So, even though it may be easier for me to pray for the lost rather than to tell my neighbor of the potential he has for a relationship with his Creator, both are vital for me to do! As you and I are pedaling along in our new life in Christ, let's do our best in every aspect and every challenge: the ups and the downs!

Well, I'm off to my tent and it looks like rain! Tomorrow will be another day of climbs and descents.

Day two of the acual Bike ride......

I never studied much or did great in my High School Physical Anatomy classes which is now quite sad. Had I listened to my teacher’s wisdom I would easily be able to list the parts of my body that really hurt tonight from these fist two days of riding – so many hurts all over and more keep joining this party of pain every mile. Of course I know when you take a 50 year old guy and send him up mountains on a bike this is bound to happen.

Painful as it has been both yesterday and today, and dare I say it, tomorrow, something interesting has happened to me. I have been able to see some of the beautiful creations of God: deer, antelope a few elk plus the breath taking mountains that have challenged me every turn of the wheel.

Here is what I have discovered today: Even in difficult times, if we look, we can see the wonders of God.

All of us face the mountain at times in our life where we do not know if we can go a step more but if we keep going and reach the summit we will see some beautiful sights that only those who push on will ever see.

As your day is so shall your strength be is the promise of God for the mountains we cross in this life time. Trust God and look for His beauty.

Against the Wind

Yesterday we left Billings, Montana bright and early, with strong legs and eager spirits and IT'S A GOOD THING! We pushed against the wind all day long, for the entire 62 miles to Harlowton. The wind was so strong that once I crested a mountaintop and tried to coast downhill (which is what I was waiting for the whole time I was pushing up the hill), the wind wouldn't let me just coast. It stopped me! So, even going downhill required constant pedaling. Whew!

As you know, sometimes LIFE offers us adversity and it's quite similar to pedaling against the wind. However, we still push on!

As I prepare to lay my head on my trusty camp pillow in my tent, with aching muscles and my Ibuprofen, I encourage you to not give up! Keep pedaling, even when you thought it would all be a downhill coast. God is with you through each and every step.

Tomorrow we tackle the mountains of Montana once again. I'm praying for a little flat land and no wind.

Have you ever began a trip and wondered if you should have stayed home? I am not there yet but the thought has crossed my mind. Rather than focus on me today I want to talk about those who are traveling with me. All three have had extreme influences in my life. I will start with the older: my brother Tom.

Tom has always been the rock of Christian faith to me. He has excelled in so many things in life. He has been a successful youth pastor, evangelist, pastor, church planter (present) and, of course, biker. To me he becomes a person you want to pattern your life after.

Jay is my best friend and has been since we were young teenagers (12 and 13 years of age). Over the years Jay has been my confident, encourager and supporter. We have just become great friends as have our kids. This type of friendship is truly a gift of God and I am so thankful God brought Jay and his family into my life at such a young age.

Finally, Dave is my sister’s husband. If someone had the chance to go into a store where on the shelves you found different types of characters and personalities to choose from the near perfect design would be my brother-in-law. Over the years he has been a rock of wisdom and leadership, compassion and vision and simply a person you could count on and trust.

These are the three gifted men I am along side this week. What an honor. I respect them all a great deal. Thank God for good friends and family. Now, if only they would help me more with my gear that would even be better.

I hope God has gifted you with someone in your life that is a positive influence. If not, maybe you need to be that ‘someone’ in your neighbor’s life. Take care-

Journal Entry #1: Day before trip to Billings

Two days before my Billings – St. Regis, Montana by bike journey begins. I am both excited and somewhat, how do I say it, concerned.

The excited part is easy to explain because it is the unknown and possibilities that help form this feeling. The concerned part is a little more difficult to clarify. It is based on my own limitations and how I will do with those limitations. Having never done this type of challenge before and being all of 50 years of age it is a natural concern that all my muscles and joints hold together.

With this in mind, the past few months I have been preparing every spare moment – even with a stationary bike in my living room that I have put my share of miles on. At this moment I am fully able to cover 40 miles without much difficulty and carrying my full load of 35 extra pounds of equipment. Not bad but we will be trying for 80+ miles for the first two days before we hit the mountains the final four or five days.

This sort of reminds me of my own Spiritual journey; I prepare for each day’s walk but know that it is “only by the grace of God” I succeed. This journey with God comes with both excitement and concern. As long as I am prepared and in good spiritual condition ‘everything will work together to the good of those who Love God and are called according to His purpose’ (Romans 8:28).

Our daily devotional and information on the Biking Trip from Billings, Montana to Post Falls, Idaho begins this Saturday. Right now we are getting the last things in order for this great adventure. Each week, we travel many miles as we visit YOU in Idaho, Washington state, Arizona, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, California and Oregon!! Yes, that's a lot of miles. Thanks so much for welcoming us, taking care of us, and really believing that taking God's Word to Russia is our responsibility. Thanks for stepping out in faith, giving sacrificially and for praying with us.
